Although the wave of local mandates to ban and restrict the use water softeners has taken a dip, the issue is likely to crop up again, according to several industry experts quoted in an article on softener bans in the September 2006 issue of Water Technology® online.
Tracy Strahl, co-chair of the Water Quality Association's (WQA) Salinity Task Force, said the softener ban debate "is not going away," while Richard Hanneman, president of the Salt Institute, added that the issue remains "just below the surface."
When they re-emerge, softener bans could affect many parts of the country, including high-growth regions, communities with a demand for water reclamation and reuse, and areas where excessive water hardness exists, experts point out in the article.
