SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A project at the San Luis Obispo’s sewage treatment plant led by Cal Poly and the city will test to see if algae is capable of treating wastewater, according to The Triune.

The project has been under construction for a year and a half building nine algae-rich ponds circulating wastewater, stated the article.

Tryg Lundquist, Cal Poly professor in charge of the project, said the algae is fueled by the sunlight and feeds on pollutants in the wastewater, which can make the water cleaner and be converted into liquid biofuel or fertilizer, according to the article.
