MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — On Wednesday, about 100 protesters gathered along the Monongahela River near Morgantown, W.Va.’s water treatment plant to express opposition to proposed natural gas wells in the area, Forbes.com reported.

The protest was prompted by the recent discovery that Charleston-based Northeast Natural Energy plans to sink wells in the Morgantown Industrial Park, about 1,500 feet from a drinking water intake, the article stated.

Brett Loflin, vice president of Northeast Natural Energy, said the company is committed to environmentally sound operations.

“We understand the importance of doing this right, and we take our responsibility to protect the environment very seriously,” Loflin said.
