HUYETT, Md. — Discolored water seeping from an old landfill in Washington County was tested and found to have arsenic levels double the amount of the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards, according to the Herald-Mail.

According to the Maryland Department of the Environment spokesman Jay Apperson, the tests showed that the arsenic level was at 17 parts per billion, stated the article.

“These standards are usually set to be very conservative and protective of human health,” said Bruce James, a professor of soil chemistry at the University of Maryland, who said the finding should warrant monitoring and caution, but not necessarily alarm.
