This month's cover story, "Trace contaminants parts two and beyond," which can be found here, offers an overview of a hot topic in 2011 — trace radioactive contaminant removal. After the disasters that affected Japan this year, some customers may have inquired about such treatment. However, Peter Meyers takes a look at some of the more prevalent Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials, known as NORM, recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

These contaminants, according to Meyers, are far more common and included in the discussion are radium, radon and uranium. Click here and find out what you should know about these naturally occurring radioactive contaminants and how best to prepare your customers for treatment.

While customers should be aware of what is occurring and affecting water quality around the world, they must also understand that "radiation from natural sources makes up about 85 percent of the dose we receive each year, with almost all the rest coming from medicinal uses," writes Meyers.

Regional show draws big interest

On September 13-16, the Pacific Water Quality Association (PWQA) held its 54th Annual Convention and Trade Show in Irvine, Calif. In addition to the two-day trade show, PWQA also recognized leaders in the water industry. Among the awards presented were the Man of the Year, which is presented to the person who contributes the most in any year to the California Water Conditioning Industry, and the Hall of Fame Award, which honors and acknowledges the long, committed service of an individual to the association.

The four-day convention is well worth the investment to attend. The opportunities to network with industry peers and catch up with the association are bountiful. Additionally, the trade show offers a unique, personal experience with vendors and their technologies.

We would like to thank all of the readers and supporters of this publication and its online components for stopping by and letting us know what is on their minds. We would also like to thank the PWQA for putting together another terrific event.
