MONTGOMERY, Ala — A defective water filtration system is believed to be behind an infection outbreak in six Alabama hospitals, reported CBS News.

Nine people were killed and 10 others became ill after being exposed to contaminated liquid nutrient bags manufactured by Birmingham-based Meds IV, the article stated.

Health officials found bacteria on a faucet and some equipment at the company’s lab — the same bacteria that was detected in the bloodstreams of the affected patients, according to the story.

The IV bags have been pulled from the market as investigators are trying to figure out why the lab’s filtration system did not remove the bacteria, the story reported.
