Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is elected WHO director-general and Briggs & Stratton Corporation completes Noise, Vibration and Harshness Lab.

World Health Assembly elects new WHO director-general

Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) elected Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as its new director-general. Dr. Ghebreyesus was nominated by the Government of Ethiopia, and will begin his five-year term on July 1. Prior to his election, Dr. Ghebreyesus served as minister of foreign affairs, Ethiopia from 2012–2016 and as minister of health, Ethiopia from 2005–2012. He has also served as chairman of the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; as chairman of the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership Board; and as co-chairman of the Board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. Dr. Ghebreyesus succeeds Dr. Margaret Chan, who has been WHO’s director-general since January 2007.

Dow’s Melinda H. Keefe to receive SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), America Group, will present Dr. Melinda H. Keefe of The Dow Chemical Company with the 14th annual SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal. The Gordon E. Moore Medal was established by SCI to recognize early-career success in innovation, as reflected both in market impact and improvement to quality of life. The award will be presented at a luncheon during Innovation Day, hosted jointly by SCI and the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) September 12 at the CHF headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

NoMonia receives Executive Board Technology Award

AdEdge Water Technologies and the Environmental Protection Agency selected NoMonia as the winner of the 2017 Executive Board Technology Award at the 2017 National Federal Laboratory Consortium in San Antonio, Texas. The award highlights a successful technology transfer from a federal agency to a private sector company. NoMonia is an innovative dual-stage biological treatment technology for the removal of multiple contaminants such as ammonia, arsenic, iron and manganese from groundwater.

Dover appoints vice president, controller

Dover appointed Carrie Anderson as vice president, controller. She will also serve as the company’s principal accounting officer. Anderson has served as vice president and chief financial officer of Dover’s Engineered Systems segment since February 2014. Previously, she was vice president and chief financial officer of Dover’s former Printing & Identification segment.

HI approves Pentair Water Technologies pump test lab

Pentair Water Technologies’ pump test laboratory located in Delavan, Wisconsin, was approved through the Hydraulic Institute (HI) Lab Approval Program. The HI program assists pump original equipment managers, and other pump test laboratories improve their current laboratory procedures and policies by working with an experienced third-party auditor to develop and maintain accurate, uniform and repeatable pump testing protocols. The program also helps participating organizations adhere to the requirements of the international test laboratory accreditation standard (ISO 17025), concerning test measurement equipment.

Wilo USA makes personnel changes

Wilo USA named Tim Stapula director of marketing. In this new role, Stapula will be responsible for the overall strategy and management of Wilo USA’s marketing program, which includes overseeing new content creation, social media management, news releases, trade shows and developing advertising campaigns and sales materials. Stapula brings more than 15 years of experience to Wilo. Previously, he worked as a marketing manager for a major precision tooling company.

The company also named Brian Dretske regional sales manager of water management for the Northwest region of the U.S. In his new role, Dretske is responsible for overseeing the sales operation within his region, which includes servicing the needs of customers, developing sales strategies and setting targets, and collecting customer feedback and market research. Dretske brings more than a decade of experience to his position, having worked previously as a territory/branch manager and sales representative in the pump industry.

Danfoss awarded Edison Award for innovation

Danfoss was voted a Bronze Winner in the Edison Awards, a program that honors innovation and excellence in the development of new products and services. The awards were presented in April in New York City. The Edison Awards are judged by a panel of more than 3,000 business executives including past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medical.

HANTEMP Controls names new engineering manager

HANTEMP Controls hired mechanical engineer Jeff Mackowiak as its engineering manager. Mackowiak brings 25 years of experience in industrial refrigeration manufacturing. He is a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology’s mechanical engineering program.
