GILBERT, Ariz. — Last Friday, an employee at the Greenfield Water Reclamation Plant turned off several major operating systems in an effort to sabotage the utility, KPHO CBS 5 News reported.

The only operator working the midnight shift, 43-year-old Robert Olson walked through the plant armed with a handgun, turning off systems in order to create a buildup of methane gas, which would have resulted in a sizeable explosion at the facility, the article stated.

At about 2:40 a.m., Olson, who is a certified wastewater treatment operator through the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, called police and began negotiations before a SWAT team arrested him two hours later, according to the story.

SWAT officers escorted employees though the facility to turn the systems back on.

No one was hurt and the facility is operating successfully, the story reported.

“He wasn’t a gun toting radical by no means,” said Dave Meldoza, a long time neighbor of Olson. “Robert was never malicious or anything like that. He was a great guy all around. I'm shocked.”
