The CBWA in mid-June mailed its membership a legislative alert that explains SB 220, which was amended June 4 and passed the California Senate June 7 in a 22-15 vote.
The CBWA alert also contains sample correspondence to be sent to the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Ellen Corbett, which members can use to complete their own letter of opposition by July 2.
The bill has the following requirements:
Each bottled water company licensed in California must prepare and make available to consumers upon request a consumer confidence report (CCR) that is prepared according to the requirements for water utilities and include the required statements that apply to public drinking water.
The name and each contact information for the bottler or brand owner must be printed on the label.
The label must contain the source of the bottled water.
Printed on the label must be a California Water Quality notice that says, “For more information and to obtain additional consumer information relating to water quality, including a consumer confidence report, contact [name of bottled water company] at [telephone number or toll-free telephone number] and [at least one of the following: mailing address, e-mail address, and bottled water company Internet Web site address].”
The bill also would require that home and office delivery companies must include the telephone number and mailing address of the bottler or brand owner as well as details about the ways and means consumers can obtain a CCR.
