GALWAY, IRELAND — Residents here who have been boiling their tap water for four months may wish to visit the Galway racing festival when it opens on July 30 for a taste of the E. coli-free tap water that will be supplied to the horses.
The horses — and racegoers — will have access to water that has passed through a sand filtration system, then disinfected with ultraviolet (UV) light, according to a July 12
IrishAbroad.com report.
More than 70,000 Galway residents are still either buying bottled water or boiling their own, after a high level of
E. coli, attributed to human and animal waste, was found in Galway’s public water system in March. More than 200 cases of gastrointestinal illness related to the water contamination were
reported.
Progress has been made for some residents: The boil-water advisory was lifted for about 20,000 people in the towns of Tuam, Athenry, Claregalway and Oranmore during the week of July 9, the article said.
