TORONTO — A $1 million demonstration rainwater collection system has been proposed by city officials for Exhibition Place’s Automotive Building, which is undergoing renovations, according to a November 29 article in The Globe and Mail.
The system, to be funded in part by Toronto Water and the city, would collect rainwater at the building and use it to flush toilets in eight washrooms. It would be part of a pilot project to showcase new “green” technology for buildings, the article said.
City works committee members recommended on November 28 that council members approve the project plans.
The works committee chair, Councilor Glenn De Baeremaeker, said the system would conserve potable water, save energy and save the city money by delaying the need for new water filtration plants associated with increased demand for treated drinking water.
Some criticized the project, saying it was a waste of money.
