ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE) — A solar-powered desalination plant for drinking water is part of this Persian Gulf nation’s plans for building the “world’s greenest city,” according to a recent report in the Khaleej Times.
To be called Masdar City, it will be located near Abu Dhabi International Airport and contain about 50,000 residents and 1,500 businesses, the report said. Billed by the UAE as “the world’s first zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city,” it is planned for completion by 2015.
Landscaping inside the city and crops grown outside it will be irrigated with treated “gray water” and wastewater from a city treatment plant.
A model of the city was to be shown this week at the World Future Energy Summit being held in Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE.
