Lewisporte, Newfoundland — Eleven Newfoundland island communities, including Lewisporte, recently received a non-consumption order after officials determined the liquid chlorine disinfection pumped into the supply was tainted with an additive, according to a February 7 article in The Pilot.
Lewisporte Town Manager Perry Pond explained that the chlorine in question came from a manufacturer that the town has used for some time and that also supplies liquid chlorine to other systems.
The manufacturer also makes other bleach products and cleaners. One of the additives that gives those products their scent accidentally was added to a batch of chlorine disinfectant used by Lewisporte and other communities.
In Lewisporte, the liquid chlorine in question was only added to water that pumps through a booster station serving uptown areas.
Lewisporte is flushing its lines and has returned the remainder of the contaminated product to the manufacturer, the article said.
