GAULTOIS, NEWFOUNDLAND — After a year without safe water, the 265 residents of Gaultois, Newfoundland, have now been told that they will get a water treatment plant, according to a February 19 report in The Coaster.
Wayne Manuel, manager of the Civil/Municipal department of BAE Newplan Group, was quoted in the story as explaining that although funding for the project has been found, residents should not expect access to safe drinking water until August 2008. BAE Newplan intends to create a detailed design, submit plans for approval, and solicit bids for the project.
“The problem with the water supply in Gaultois is that the color of the water is very high,” explained Manuel in the article. “Actually, it’s one of the worst situations in the province. Color is caused by organics in the water and is the most expensive parameter to remove. It is much more expensive to remove than iron or manganese, and it is a much more expensive and complicated process to do so.”
When the project is completed it is expected that water in Gaultois will meet Canadian standards.
