OAKLAND, CA — Environmental activist Beth Terry has initiated a campaign urging Clorox to redesign its Brita water filters to make them reusable and recyclable, according to a June 24 post on CNET Network’s Green Tech Blog.
The campaign, called Take Back the Filter, has collected 6,267 signatures on a petition which urges Clorox to:
● Redesign Brita filter cartridges to be friendlier for reuse.
● Provide a take-back program so the company can collect and recycle used cartridges.
● Create a system to reuse the cartridges domestically, rather than overseas.
Brita public relations official Drew McGowan said in the article, “Our filters are made with carbon. At this time, there is no way to recycle the carbon.”
Clorox is concerned with the cost of recycling, according to the post.
People from all over the country have been sending Terry filters in anticipation of Clorox’s implementation of a recycling system. She has collected 119 so far, according to the post.
