HOMER, AK — Businesses here are facing the possibly of a rate hike for water and sewer service that would raise costs 15 percent in relation to customer use, according to an October 15 article on www.homernews.com.
City Manager Walt Wrede said in the article that because the city’s water and sewer fund is set up as an enterprise fund, revenues must meet expenditures by law. The cost of operating both systems increased dramatically over the last year, mostly due to increased electricity and fuel costs. Wrede said he thinks that there are valid reasons to subsidize the water and sewer fund.
Since residential customers use less water than businesses, they would not take as much of a financial hit under the proposed rate hike, according to the article.
