Erin Brockovich to look at MI water complaint
Tuesday, January 13, 2009

FENNVILLE, MI — A local resident here frustrated over groundwater contamination may receive some help in resolving the issue from environmental crusader Erin Brockovich and a team of lawyers, WWMT.com recently reported.

Kari Craton and her neighbors suspect that national food processor Birds Eye, which is headquartered in Rochester, NY, and has a fruit and vegetable canning plant in Fennville, is contaminating private water wells with arsenic, iron and manganese from wastewater discharges. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) backs the assertion; however, Birds Eye denies its wastewater is the cause of contamination, as WaterTech Online® reported.

Craton, who said she was frustrated after spending a day haggling with officials at Birds Eye, sent an e-mail in July to Brockovich. Brockovich, made famous when actress Julia Roberts portrayed her in the 2000 movie about Brockovich’s life, helped take on a utility company in California for contaminating water there. In the current situation in Michigan, Brockovich reportedly replied to Craton within 24 hours.

“I was totally amazed it was that quick,” Craton said, noting that Brockovich and a team of lawyers plan to look into the well water near Craton’s home and Birds Eye’s Fennville plant.
