RENO, NV — The Truckee Meadows Water Authority, a major supplier of drinking water to the Reno-Sparks region, said a new report points to the quality of its publicly supplied drinking water, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on April 3.
The authority’s 2009 Water Quality Report indicates that 17 out of 17 contaminants tested were below federal maximum contaminant levels; arsenic and nitrates were the two contaminants closest to violation.
Paul Miller, the authority’s manager of operations and water quality, said that a bulk of the source water, drawn from the Truckee River, is high in naturally occurring arsenic and nitrates.
The report also included results of tests completed last May for pharmaceutical and personal care product chemical compounds. Results of those tests showed no measurable pharmaceutical products in the Truckee River, as WaterTech Online™ reported.
Miller, who noted the tests were prompted by a March 2008 Associated Press report revealing that up to 41 million Americans drink water from sources contaminated by pharmaceuticals, said that it is unlikely similar tests will be repeated due to both the cost (about $5,000) and the lack of evidence indicating a problem, the article said.
