A single trace contaminant like arsenic often can cause a well owner to consider some sort of water treatment for the very first time, or a municipal system consider installing the only treatment the system will have beyond chlorination.
However, treating drinking water to remove arsenic or some other contaminant may reveal other issues the owner never knew they had, or even create a second set of problems if not handled properly, states author Fredrick W. Vance, Ph.D., in a technical article in the August issue of Water Technology® Magazine, which is now online.
The article, “Unintended consequences of arsenic treatment,” looks at removal of arsenic from drinking water and the planning for — and removal of — other water treatment issues that may arise.
