BRYN MAWR, PA — Aqua Pennsylvania Inc., a subsidiary of water and wastewater utility holding company Aqua America, has begun construction on a $5.6 million solar farm at its Ingram’s Mill water treatment plant in East Bradford Township, PA, the company announced in a November 11 statement.
State and local officials, as well as environmental regulators, joined Aqua Pennsylvania Chairman Nick DeBenedictis and President Karl Kyriss at a November 12 groundbreaking ceremony at the plant’s site. The company has described the installation as “one of the first and largest solar farms of its kind on the East Coast.”
The solar farm will be capable of generating 1.1 megawatts of electricity from photovoltaic panels on 4.5 acres. The Ingram’s Mill Treatment Plant produces water that is delivered to the West Chester area.
The solar farm project is partially funded with a $1 million stimulus grant administered by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.
Aqua Pennsylvania said in a November 12 Philadelphia Business Journal report that the solar farm will reduce its power purchases by 1.3 million kilowatt hours a year, saving it $77,000 annually.
