VILLAGE OF VOLENTE, TX — The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on November 18 is scheduled to consider a proposal that would lift a 23-year ban on discharges of treated wastewater into the Highland Lakes, a source of drinking water for more than 1 million people, a November 17 Associated Press story in The Houston Chronicle said.
Some waterfront property owners, elected officials and environmentalists have opposed the proposal.
The proposal comes from the cities of Leander and Granite Shoals, which are looking to reduce costs associated with the handling of treated effluent, the story said.
Proponents of the plan say it will help foster economic growth by boosting available water resources.
The Highland Lakes, which spread across a wide expanse of the Texas Hill Country near Austin, include lakes Travis, Austin, Buchanan, Marble Falls, Inks and LBJ.
