CORK, IRELAND — Flood conditions throughout counties Cork, Galway and Kerry in southern and western Ireland have created emergency conditions, including a shutdown of the public water system in the city of Cork, local media reported November 20.
The Cork City Council shut down the entire central-city drinking water system to prevent damage to the pumping station, damage that could contaminate supplies, the Herald reported November 20.
More than 3 feet of rushing water drew 110 soldiers in off-road trucks and flat-bottomed boats to assist in the worst-hit areas of Cork, and 300 more soldiers remained on call.
The weather forecast calls for at least four hours of heavy downpours between November 20 and November 21; cleanup costs already have hit the multi-million euro mark, IrelandOn-line reported November 20.
Recent floods also devastated the United Kingdom's Lake District in northwest England, according to a November 20 Associated Press (AP) story.
