$117.3M in stimulus funds for rural water projects
Monday, November 23, 2009

WASHINGTON — US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack on November 18 announced the selection of $117.3 million in water and environmental project loans and grants that are being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus program).

The funding will support 31 water and wastewater projects in 17 states.

Awards include:

● A $3.2 million loan and a $2.7 million grant to Starr-Iva Water and Sewer District in Anderson, SC, to provide a new water system to more than 400 residents of Anderson County. The new system will replace individual wells — many with poor water quality.

● A $6.4 million loan and $7.2 million grant to the city of Swainsboro, GA, to repair and renovate a wastewater treatment plant, including installation of a new main line and repair of a pump station and collection lines. Emanuel County has a population of 6,943 and has been identified as having above-average levels of poverty. The city is working under a consent order that will be removed with completion of these improvements, according to the USDA announcement.

This round of ARRA funding is being administered by USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program, which provides loans and grants to ensure investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and protect the environment in rural areas.
