BOSTON — Water bottler Poland Spring, Poland Spring, ME, has been recognized by the national nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) for its innovative greenhouse gas reduction strategies to help reduce truck-fleet emissions.
In a December 3 press release, the EDF identified three companies for their greenhouse-gas reduction strategies. In addition to Poland Spring, air conditioning, heating and refrigeration system manufacturer Carrier and healthcare company Novo Nordisk also were recognized.
The EDF noted that the three distinctly different companies “have implemented strategies that fit with their business needs, have encouraged employees to adopt better long-term driving habits and have resulted in real emissions reductions.”
Poland Spring, a division of Nestlé Waters North America, was recognized for using non-food based biofuels, reducing top vehicle speeds by 2 miles per hour and reducing truck idling time by 70 percent from 2007 to 2009, the release said.
Chris McKenna, fleet manager at Poland Spring, said in a December 3 Poland Spring press release: “Poland Spring is proud that the Environmental Defense Fund chose to recognize our efforts to help protect the environment of local Maine communities in which we operate. Maine has been our home for over 160 years. Our nearly 800 full-time and seasonal employees and their families come from about 125 local communities. We are committed to doing our part to make Maine a better place to live and work through our environmental stewardship and community partnerships.”
