WASHINGTON — Dangerous levels of tritum, a known carcinogen, have been detected in the groundwater around 27 of the 104 nuclear reactors in the United States, according to a press release.
A by-product of nuclear fission, tritum has been leaking from US nuclear reactors mostly through deteriorated underground pipes, the release stated.
The most recent finding occurred at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear plant, where a concentration of more than three times the federal safety standard for tritum was detected, according to the release.
Tritum has been showed to cause cancer if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, the release stated.
