WASHINGTON — An operational requirements document (ORD) issued by the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) that calls for a self-contained, self-powered water purification system has attracted the attention of eight small businesses, according to a press release.
The ORD was released in April 2009 through an S&T public-private partnership known as SECURE (System Efficacy through Commercialization, Utilization, Relevance and Evaluation), the release stated
The firms — Alten Energy Solutions, Aqua Sciences, First Water, PureSafe Water Systems, RescueWater, Spectra Watermakers, Wellspring Trailer Group and WorldWater — are honing their systems to the ORD’s specifications, according to the release.
If the technology is approved, S&T will certify it and the firms can start marketing their products using the SECURE insignia, the release stated.
“The SECURE program is pushing companies to compete at producing lifesaving innovations,” said Mary Hanson, S&T’s interagency coordinator. “And purifying large amounts of water when its needed most won’t just save lives, it could save communities.”
