Great Lakes restoration gets funding boost
Friday, June 28, 2002
HAMILTON, ONTARIO — David Anderson, Canada's minister of the Environment, said Thursday that 49 projects received a total of $2.8 million as part of the government commitment to restoring the Great Lakes Basin ecosystem.

The Great Lakes Sustainability funding supports projects that, in partnership with local government and community groups, restore habitat for fish and wildlife, develop new ways of managing wastewater and prevent agricultural run-off from flowing into streams and rivers that empty into the Great Lakes, Anderson said in a news release.

"One of the strengths of the fund is that it fosters partnership and the engagement of communities in this on-the-ground restoration work," said Anderson. "Restoring the Great Lakes is a priority for the government of Canada, and is an essential element of Environment Canada's priorities on both clean water and the protection of our natural legacy."

The funding is from the Government of Canada's Great Lakes Sustainability Fund, first announced in July 2000.

Under this fund, Canada is investing CAN$30 million (US$19.8 million) over five years to help restore the remaining Canadian Areas of Concern (AOC).

The funding is an important component of the federal Great Lakes Basin 2020 Action Plan that includes Health Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Canadian Heritage, Transport Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Public Works and Government Services Canada and Environment Canada.
