SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — Restaurants and bars are charging customers enough to make profits of 400 percent on wholesale prices, raising questions about whether the pricing may be illegal, The Sunday Telegraph reported.
The paper stated the cost of bottled water has sky-rocketed as pubs, clubs and restaurants resist giving their customers tap water, a trend that seems to be spreading.
According to The Sunday Telegraph, under new guidelines it is illegal to charge more for a bottle of water than a glass of beer or wine. Reportedly, the Australian Consumers' Association has welcomed these new guidelines.
The Department of Gaming and Racing has received dozens of complaints over water prices, the newspaper reported.
