Poland Spring Water pulled from shelves in Maine
Friday, December 05, 2003
BRIDGTON, ME — Police here said two people became sick after drinking Poland Spring bottled water, and the Food City grocery store that sold the water has pulled it off the shelves, The Associated Press (AP) said in a story reported by WMTW-TV.

At least two gallon-sized bottles apparently were contaminated with an unidentified chemical, the AP stated.

Bridgton police said in the report that a 40-year-old man became violently ill after drinking the water Dec. 3 and had to be taken to a hospital. A four-year-old girl who drank the water Dec. 4 became less seriously ill.

The water came from Poland Spring's Hollis bottling plant, and a corporate spokeswoman said in the report that the contamination appeared to be an isolated incident. She added that there's no indication that the contamination occurred at the plant.

Bridgton police said the chemical had a paint cleaner-like smell. Police said there's no evidence that the containers had been tampered with, the AP reported.
