AWWA: More federal funds required to meet drinking water needs
Friday, April 30, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC – Increased federal assistance will be required over the next three decades in order for the nation to meet growing drinking water infrastructure needs, AWWA Water Utility Council Chairman Howard Neukrug told a US House of Representatives subcommittee on April 29, according to an American Water Works Association (AWWA) news release.

According to the association's release, $250 to $300 billion will be needed over the next 30 years for maintaining and improving the country's drinking water systems. These needs include pipe repair, increased regulation, security needs and replacement of lead service lines.

Neukrug told the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure that America needs "a new partnership for reinvesting in drinking water infrastructures," the release said.

"AWWA does believe that due to concurrent needs for investment in water and wastewater infrastructure, security projects, replacement of treatment plants, new drinking water standards and demographic changes, many utilities will be very hard pressed to meet their capital needs without some form of federal assistance," Neukrug said in the release.
