ERWIN, NC — Short-term improvements to the town's water and sewer system would cost $8.4 million, while more extensive repairs would cost an additional $4.1 million, The Fayetteville Observer reported.
A study had been commissioned by the town in order to estimate the costs of the upgrades. The town sought the report from an engineering firm as it considers whether the water and sewer system should be sold to Harnett County, the article said.
The report, completed in July and submitted to the Board of Commissioners Aug. 5, will be the subject of a special meeting Aug. 25. "It's a very large decision," Town Manager Al Thornton said in the article, "probably one of the biggest decisions in the history of the town."
Thornton said the town has received about $4.5 million in grants and loans to work on its utility. Part of the town's system is more than 75 years old, officials told the paper.
