TORONTO – A water diversion proposal issued this week by eight US states and two Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes is being criticized by some Canadian environmentalists and politicians as a water grab, according to an article by the Detroit Free Press.
According to the article, the proposal issued by the Council of Great Lake Governors is designed to protect the Great Lakes by setting forth stringent requirements for water withdrawals, but some Canadians are concerned that the agreement will allow the US to further siphon water from the Great Lakes.
In fact, the Council of Canadians is calling on Prime Minister Paul Martin to veto the plan, the paper reported.
Some Canadian environmentalists and politicians have long complained that the US consumes too much Great Lakes water, and many Canadians are wary of any diversion plans.
