ASHLAND, WI — Ashland's Comprehensive Plan committee joined with area residents and conservation groups in urging officials of the state Department of Natural Resources to hold firm to businesses that may attempt to take more than their share of the Great Lakes water supply, the Associated Press reported in the Duluth News Tribune.
The proposed resource protection standard would require unanimous approval of the eight Great Lakes states for any water diversions outside the basin of more than 1 million gallons per day, the article said.
Those making such diversions would also be required to return the same amount of water and make an improvement to the basin, the AP reported.
