OTTAWA, CANADA — A parliamentary committee will examine a pending agreement on the controversial Great Lakes plan that would allow diversion of water out of its basin, according to The Toronto Star.
A motion by New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen passed yesterday, suggesting the environment committee study the deal between eight US governors and the Ontario and Quebec provincial governments, the article said.
New Democrat MP Joe Comartin, who has pursued the issue for several years, said in the article that a strong message must be sent to the provinces that the Great Lakes Annex 2001 Implementing Agreement treads on federal terrain.
Comartin also noted in the article that First Nations communities have not weighed in on the agreement, which, if passed, could affect land claims. The committee is to report to Parliament by Nov. 26, the newspaper said.
