New hearings possible on Great Lakes water use
Monday, January 17, 2005
TOLEDO, OH — The Canadian government's reaction to a US-led plan for curbing Great Lakes diversions and bulk withdrawals could reopen public hearings on the debate this summer, the Toledo Blade reported today.

While much attention has focused on the potential for water exports to Southern California, Arizona, and other drought-affected states, many officials view the growing needs of near-shoreline communities in states such as Ohio and Wisconsin as a more immediate threat, the paper said.

Suburban Milwaukee and other parts of southeastern Wisconsin lie just outside the water basin and are running particularly low on drinkable groundwater. To a lesser degree, so are parts of northern Ohio, including western Lucas County, the article said.

The paper noted that some Canadian officials have stated that they view the Great Lakes plan as uneven for the provinces of Ontario and Quebec to water given to US states, but future talks may provide a chance for redistribution plans for the fresh water supply.
