Great Lakes could see big boost from Bush budget
Monday, February 07, 2005
WASHINGTON — President Bush is requesting $50 million in the fiscal year 2006 budget to implement the Great Lakes Legacy Act, an increase of nearly $28 million over fiscal year 2005 funding, according to a release on US Newswire.

President's Executive Order 13340 is being implemented as a large-scale collaboration between the federal government, the Great Lakes states, local communities, tribes and others in the region, the release reported.

According to the release, more than 30 million Americans living in communities around the five Great Lakes are dependent on the Great Lakes for their drinking water.

In addition, the lakes support billions of dollars in shipping, trade, and fishing and provide food and recreational opportunities for millions of Americans, the release said.

"Ensuring the health of the Great Lakes is a high priority for this administration," Ben Grumbles, assistant administrator for the Office of Water, said in the release. "The president is requesting this substantial increase in the funding to support the commitment to leave the Great Lakes better than we found them."

The collaboration is working toward a December deadline for presenting a plan for making the Great Lakes cleaner, the news agency reported.
