DETROIT — Whether or not St. Clair River erosion has permanently lowered Great Lakes water levels is a question that may soon be answered by a $2.5 million federal study proposed by US Rep. Candice Miller, according to an article today in the Detroit Free Press.
The proposed study would be conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers and the International Joint Commission, a bi-national group assisting US and Canadian governments in managing boundary waters, the newspaper reported.
According to the article, Miller's plan would add money for the study to the Water Resources Development Act reauthorization, which will be taken up by House committees this spring.
According to WaterTechOnline archives, more than 30 million Americans living in communities around the five Great Lakes are dependent on the fresh water source for their drinking water.
In addition, the lakes support billions of dollars in shipping and trade, and have been the focus of a developing water rights issue between bordering US states and Canada's Ontario and Quebec provinces.
