Drinking Water Week highlights security
Friday, May 06, 2005
DENVER — National Drinking Water Week has prompted water officials to acknowledge water security issues throughout the industry, according to a May 5 news release by the American Water Works Association AWWA).

The AWWA estimates water utilities throughout the United States have spent approximately $2 billion since 2002 to upgrade security, with better fencing, cameras, locks and other physical improvements, the release said.

Water officials gathered last month at AWWA's Water Security Congress in Oklahoma City to examine the latest in contamination warning technologies that are improving chemists' ability to detect undesirable substances in drinking water, the release said.

The event saw more than 50 manufacturers of security technologies who were present to share the latest innovations with attendees, the AWWA reported.

National Drinking Water Week ended this weekend, marking another year of secured measures to safeguard American water in a post-9/11 world.
