GLASGOW, SCOTLAND — Some supermarkets in Scotland are now selling beer cheaper than bottled water, and Scots fighting alcohol abuse are not happy, said a recent article in Glasgow's Daily Record.
As a result of supermarket promotions, some popular brands of lager beer are now selling for as little as 40p (about 74 cents) a can or bottle, the article said.
The article said one supermarket chain in Scotland, ASDA, that sells a liter bottle of water for 54p (about 99 cents) is charging the equivalent of about 45p (about 83 cents) for a can or bottle of brand-name beer when the beer is purchased in two 20-pack crates.
Two spokesmen for groups fighting alcohol abuse in Scotland complained to the newspaper that the promotions would exacerbate the health and social ills associated with excessive alcohol consumption.
