TORONTO — The United Church of Canada (UCC), the largest Protestant denomination in Canada, has officially called for a boycott on bottled water, asking its 590.000 members to rely on municipal water instead, according to a September 7 story on the Canadiachristianity Web site.
The church had been considering the boycott in August, saying members were worrying about the privatization of water; a vote by the church's council finalized the decision to initiate the boycott.
Church Social Policy Coordinator Richard Chambers said in the story, "The main thrust is our concern about the privatization of water. UCC is committed to supporting municipal water sources wherever they exist in the country, and strengthening those."
The church also believes that water is God's creation and no one should profit from it when tap water is just as good and will save and protect natural water resources, according to the story.
