Las Vegas water war goes to the state capitol
Monday, September 11, 2006
LAS VEGAS — Opponents of the $2 billion plan that would take 33 billion gallons of water from rural water wells and transfer it over 200 miles away to Las Vegas are taking their concerns to Carson City, hoping the state capitol will hear their side of the story, according to a September 10 story in the Las Vegas Sun.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority claims it will carefully manage the wells, causing no significant impacts on the water supply, but opponents believe the plan would hurt their water supply, wildlife, farms, ranches and their area's growth potential, according to the story.

Arguments at the hearings starting today in Carson City are expected to last three weeks and will be heard by Nevada State Engineer Tracy Taylor, who will ultimately decide whether the plan goes forward, the story said.

During the hearing the Water Authority is bringing in 50 potential witnesses; and opponents will bring 15 witnesses, according to the story.
