More Legionnaires' cases occur in Northeast
Wednesday, October 18, 2006
WATERBURY, CT — A postal worker here has contracted Legionnaires' disease from the post office's water supply, making him the fifth victim in Connecticut of the disease that recently has sickened others in the Northeast.

According to a recent story by NBC 30, the water pipes at the post office are being cleaned and the postal service has brought in portable toilets and bottled water for employees.

In Mercer County, NJ, officials are investigating whether an elderly woman, who was diagnosed with Legionnaires', visited an apartment building where the hot-water system tested positive for the disease in September, sickening two residents, according to an October 18 story in The Star Ledger.

In New Britain, CT, an office building's water supply was shut off after an employee fell ill with the disease, according to an October 12 story in the Hartford Courant.

Officials are not saying if he contracted the disease from the water, but tests came back showing high levels of some bacteria; the water supply was then chlorinated, superheated and flushed, the story said.
