Store customers fight over limited bottled water
Monday, November 20, 2006
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — A fight broke out when customers tried to get their hands on the limited supply of bottled water at the Grandview Highway CostCo, following a boil-water advisory affecting 2 million people, according to a November 18 story from Canada.com.

Hundreds lined up outside the CostCo when it opened at 10 a.m., to purchase bottled water; as the crowd surged and became unruly, police showed up by 10:15 a.m. to try and maintain order, the story said.

One man's hand was bloodied in the fight, two women were pushed down to the ground, and chaos ensued while people stole water from other customers' carts, the story reported.

CostCo's Senior Vice President Russ Miller said there were no reports of injuries from the Grandview store and he wasn't sure why police were called in, according to the story.

CostCo ran out of most bottled waters soon after opening, causing some costumers to settle for Perrier and Pellegrino, which also sold out a half hour after the store opened, the story reported.

A reporter for Canadian.com covering the story had his foot run over by a frenzied customer's shopping cart, according to the story.

The boil-water order had been issued when turbidity levels in tap water increased after a powerful storm swept across the province earlier last week, according to a November 17 WaterTechOnline story.
