CADILLAC, MI — The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has given Peterson's Citgo, a service station located in this city's downtown, an official "red tag" for contaminating the groundwater and putting the area's drinking water at risk, a February 27 WPBN story said.
The red tag bans the station from accepting fuel for its underground tanks, the story reported.
A leak was discovered 13 years ago, and DEQ officials believe the gas station didn't properly clean it up, according to the story.
Last summer, a chemical plume was discovered about 3,000 feet from the station and close to the area's drinking water supply. DEQ officials issued several warnings to the station, which took no action, the story said.
For the red tag to be lifted, the gas station must come up with a plan to clean up the contaminated area, the story reported.
