Water Technology Group Digital Associate Editor Robyn Tucker recently spoke with Neil Callahan, VP of Louis Berger‘s Water Services Division Owners Representatives Service Area, which frequently involves desalination projects in North America, including the desalination plant in Carlsbad, California.
Callahan discussed his company’s involvement in the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant, which is the largest in North America. The first project of this scale, the design and construction of the facility met and overcame numerous challenges to be in operation. Callahan said there were "challenges virtually across the life cycle of delivery" from the six years it took to obtain permits, to new technologies needed for the facility, to finding experienced operators.

The facility provides San Diego County residents with 50 million gallons of water per day.
