PHOENIX — According to a study conducted by researchers at Arizona State University, alternatives to domestic ion exchange water softening proved effective at reducing scale.

The study, titled “Evaluations of Alternatives to Domestic Ion Exchange Water Softeners,” found that the most promising alternative technology is template assisted crystallization, which demonstrated scale reductions of over 90 percent.

According to the researchers, further study is needed to examine the mechanisms at work for magnetic treatment methods.

Mara Ramos, one of the researchers, presented the results of the study during the 15th Annual Water Reuse & Desalination Conference, which took place May 16-17 in Las Vegas.
