Agbar to build desalination plant in Chilean desert

BARCELONA, Spain — The $300 million plant would supply water to the Atacama desert.

BARCELONA, Spain — Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona SA has filed an environmental study to deliver desalinated water to the northern Atacama desert in Chile, according to an article from Bloomberg.

The desalination plant and pipelines will cost an approximate $300 million, the article reported.

The company is controlled by France's Suez Environnement Co. and known as Agbar, the article noted.

According to the article, developers of copper, gold and iron-ore mines in the desert are increasing the demand for water in the area.

The article noted that Agbar also provides water to residents in Santiago, Chile.
