Alaska DOT settles with EPA over outdated wells

JUNEAU, Ala. — The EPA claims the wells are outdated and pose a risk to groundwater.

JUNEAU, Ala. — Alaska's Department of Transportation (DOT) has settled with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and agreed to pay $332,000 for violations of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, according to an article on Anchorage Daily News.

The DOT will also close and sample 55 motor vehicle waste disposal wells by 2018, the article reported.

According to the article, the EPA has said the wells are outdated and pose a risk to groundwater and drinking water in the area.

The wells were used to dispose of storm water, snowmelt and water used to wash vehicles, the release noted.
