California irrigation equipment sales spike due to drought

TULARE, Calif. — Farmers are relying more on irrigation equipment to move available water to their fields.

TULARE, Calif. — Irrigation equipment manufacturers are getting an unexpected boost from California's drought, according to an article by the Los Angeles Times.

While California farmers and ranchers struggle to water their plants and animals, companies specializing in services like well repair, turbine pumps for wells and drip irrigation have seen a sharp increase in demand, the article reported.

At The World Ag Expo, the largest farm equipment show in the world which took place this week in Tulare, it was clear that growers are relying on irrigation companies to help them deliver the water that is available to their fields in a variety of ways, the article noted.

"They're not just helping farmers adapt, they're helping them survive," said Mark Watte, a past president of the expo, which ends Thursday. "There's going to be a lot of talk here about drought."

But the increased demand is a double-edged sword, continued the article, as the customers these companies rely on could go out of business if the drought continues.
