Chromium levels in groundwater concern Baltimore residents

BALTIMORE — Groundwater chromium levels near a former processing plant have put nearby development on hold.

BALTIMORE — Local residents and scientists are worried about elevated levels of cancer-causing chromium near the former site of a chromium processing plant that is now capped, according to an article from The Baltimore Sun.

Officials have put plans by Beatty Development Group to temporarily expose the contaminated soil while building an office building over the capped site on hold to discuss environmental concerns, the article reported.

According to the article, chromium has been found in some off-site monitoring wells and in air particles in downtown Baltimore.

"We need to know where the levels have increased, why they're increasing," said city councilman James B. Craft.  "We need to…have that answer before we start development."
